DeSantis, Uthmeier announce arrests of 20 people in Florida for voter fraud

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Attorney General James Uthmeier announced 20 arrests for voter fraud Thursday in Palm Beach County: 16 non-citizens accused of claiming U.S. citizenship to register, and four people who voted while on felony probation. Each charge is a third-degree felony carrying up to 10 years, and officials say more than 100 arrests have come from the Office of Election Crimes since 2022.

A former DOJ trial attorney flagged the timing, noting Justice Department practice has been to avoid such announcements close to an election. The state's own 2025 annual report shows 3,400 complaints last year yielded just 44 arrests or convictions, and a similar 2022 pre-primary announcement of 20 arrests saw some charges later dismissed. The Palm Beach County elections supervisor said she was not told about the press conference in advance.

Three thousand four hundred complaints, forty four arrests. Run those numbers on a fishing trip and you'd start telling people you went for the fresh air. The part that sticks with me is that the county elections supervisor, the one person whose job this actually is, found out the same way the rest of us did, and the last time they did this show some of the charges quietly fell apart after the cameras left.
