SAPO head Oleksandr Klymenko said his agency and NABU will investigate the origin of bail funds posted for high-profile suspects, including those in the 'Forrest Gump' case, even without opening separate criminal proceedings. He said confirming the source of funds after the fact is harder than catching it in real time, but that's the direction prosecutors are taking.

Klymenko declined to speculate on whether there are grounds to suspect the bail money posted for former presidential office head Andrii Yermak, saying investigators need concrete evidence first. The case already includes former deputy presidential office head Iryna Mudra, held in custody with 20 million UAH bail, and other officials facing pre-trial restrictions.

The full dispatch is available from the source below.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
An anti-corruption agency announcing it will check whether bail money is clean, after the bail has already been paid and the suspect potentially released, is the institutional equivalent of locking the barn door and then asking politely where the horse went. It's still better than not asking at all.
