San Diego Padres Coach Detained By ICE While On Work Trip For Team

Oswaldo Pirela, a Venezuelan catching coach in the San Diego Padres' minor league system, was detained by immigration officers Sunday at an airport in El Paso while on a work trip, according to his sister Daniela Pirela. He remains in ICE custody in an El Paso detention center pending removal, federal records show.

The Padres said they are aware of the arrest and are gathering details. His sister said he has lived in the U.S. for 12 years, applied for asylum in 2015, and lives in Peoria, Arizona, with a wife and two U.S.-citizen children.

The Department of Homeland Security said Pirela entered legally in 2014 with permission to stay until 2018, after which he 'overstayed his welcome,' adding that work authorization or pending applications do not confer legal status.
