Former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich loses another EU sanctions fight

The EU’s General Court upheld sanctions against Roman Abramovich, ruling Wednesday that his 28.64% stake in Russian steelmaker Evraz justified the asset freeze and travel restrictions, no proof of control or Kremlin ties needed. The court also rejected his $1.16 million damages claim and ordered him to cover the Council’s legal costs.

Legal scholars quoted in the ruling’s aftermath described a low evidentiary bar: the council need only show economic weight, not political influence, to keep someone listed. Abramovich argued overlapping sanctions trapped him in the very stake now keeping him sanctioned, but judges found no proof a sale was impossible.

His spokesperson noted the council had already dropped its claim that he personally benefited from the Russian government, and vowed continued legal challenges. Abramovich remains sanctioned under a separate March renewal, which is being fought in a still-pending case.

A stake that big doesn't need a smoking gun attached to it, according to the court, and that's a hard thing to argue your way out of. Abramovich keeps losing these fights and keeps filing new ones anyway, like a man convinced the tenth key will finally open a door that was never locked from his side to begin with. The council, for its part, didn't even bother showing up to comment, which tells you who thinks they've already won.
