A new documentary, 'First They Came for My College,' tracks the state's 2023 takeover of New College of Florida, when Gov. Ron DeSantis replaced the entire Board of Trustees with political appointees including Christopher Rufo. The film also covers a separate incident at Florida International University, where 20 students in 'ICE Off FIU' T-shirts staged a silent protest at a President Nuñez event and were subsequently disciplined and told to record apology videos, before a federal judge ordered the university to stop punishing the students.

Director Patrick Bresnan had New College students, including Gaby Batista of the student newspaper The Catalyst, film the fallout on iPhones: the firing of president Patricia Okker, denial of tenure to professors, the shutdown of the Gender Studies Program, and books discarded from the library. DeSantis-appointed boards have also installed former politicians and businesspeople with no higher-education experience as presidents at FIU, Florida A&M, Florida Atlantic, and the University of West Florida.

A college that used to turn out Fulbright scholars now has trustees who think a silent T-shirt is a disciplinary matter and a shortstop counts as a guest lecturer. You don't need a film degree to notice when the people running a school have never actually needed one themselves. The apology videos are the detail that sticks, like being sent to write lines for the crime of standing up quietly in a room.
