Luigi Mangione, 28, pleaded guilty in federal court in New York to killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on a Manhattan street in December 2024. Under questioning from Judge Margaret Garnett, he confirmed he understood he could face life in prison, then read a statement describing how he researched the company's December conference, posed as an investor by email, and shot Thompson that morning.

Thompson's family sat in the front row and appeared visibly emotional as Mangione entered his plea, later saying in a statement that the day marked an important step toward justice. Prosecutors have recommended a sentence of 24-30 years on the federal charges; Mangione is scheduled to be sentenced December 18, and a separate state trial is still set to begin in September.
