South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham, sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, to fill his Senate seat in July 2026, and she has since finished first in a 10-candidate GOP primary with nearly 33% of the vote, heading to an Aug. 25 runoff against Rep. Ralph Norman. She has no prior elected office experience beyond heading the South Carolina Commission for the Blind.

Her rise echoes the historic 'widow's mandate,' through which 48 women have entered Congress via a deceased relative's seat, most often a husband's. Scholars note her case is unusual because, unlike many congressional widows who were governing partners, her claim rests almost entirely on her brother's name recognition rather than shared political labor.

American democracy has always had a soft spot for surname recycling, it just usually waited for a husband to die instead of a brother. Calling this history rather than nepotism is generous, but at least it is consistent history — the brand matters more than the résumé, every single time.
