Meloni government becomes Italy’s longest-serving since Mussolini

Giorgia Meloni's coalition has now governed Italy continuously for 1,413 days, the longest run of any postwar Italian government and second only to Mussolini's two-decade dictatorship, according to Euractiv. It edges past Silvio Berlusconi's second government, which lasted 1,412 days from 2001 to 2005.

Supporters rallied under the slogan “The Most Stable Government, A Stronger Italy” to mark the milestone. Meloni took office in October 2022 as the first woman to lead Italy's Council of Ministers, at a time when many in Brussels expected her post-fascist party to be a destabilizing force in the EU.

Instead she has become an influential player on migration, trade and Ukraine policy, even as she faces rising living costs, coalition friction over defense spending, tension with the Trump administration, and a resurgent nationalist right ahead of 2027 elections.

Sticking around this long is its own kind of achievement, the way a fence post that hasn't rotted yet counts as a good fence post. But endurance and success are two different ledgers, and Italy's grocery bills and coalition squabbles don't care how many days the government has been open. Comparing your staying power to Mussolini's, even by accident of arithmetic, is not the flex a press release wants it to be.
