Zelenskyy says Zakarpattia could become major power supplier to EU

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told the first Carpathian Economic Forum that the Carpathian region could become a major energy supplier to the European Union, citing solar, wind, storage and Ukraine's underground gas facilities as assets, including a proposed 1.5-gigawatt wind cluster.

The forum, hosted by the President's Office, presented 95 projects worth more than €42.5 billion across energy, industry, transport and other sectors, with 55 projects worth €8 billion located inside Ukraine's Carpathian region. Nearly 1,400 participants from 25 countries attended, including representatives from the eight-country Carpathian Initiative.

Zelenskyy argued that wartime infrastructure investment, including strengthened roads, railways and ports among neighboring countries, should become permanent rather than emergency measures, and framed the broader push as advancing Ukraine's integration into the EU economy.

A wartime president standing at a podium selling wind turbines and gas storage to investors takes a certain kind of nerve, and you have to admire the hustle even while wondering how many of these 95 projects ever clear the drawing board. Big round numbers at forums have a way of shrinking once contractors show up and ask who's paying for the concrete. Still, a country under missile fire pitching itself as Europe's next power supplier is a story worth watching rather than mocking outright.
