Chinese leader Xi Jinping traveled to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, for the 25th anniversary summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, joining Vladimir Putin, Narendra Modi and Iran's Masoud Pezeshkian rather than addressing a humanitarian crisis at the Nepal-Tibet border. The SCO, born from post-Cold War border talks as the 'Shanghai Five,' has become a stage for China's Global Security Initiative and yuan-promotion efforts.

The gathering precedes a high-profile Xi visit to the United States in late September and an upcoming BRICS summit, part of what the report frames as an effort to position China as leader of a non-Western bloc. India and China also held border talks via national security adviser Ajit Doval and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, described as a sign neither wants added friction right now.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Nothing says 'anti-American solidarity' like a room full of leaders who'd each rather deal with Washington bilaterally than share credit with each other. Xi gets his group photo; whether it means anything once everyone flies home is, as usual, the part nobody in Bishkek wants to discuss.
