A study of 59,218 adults published in BMC Medicine found that replacing 30 minutes of sitting with movement lowered risk across 13 cancers linked to inactivity, while replacing movement with sitting raised risk by 8%. Researchers tracked participants with smartwatches for a week, then checked medical records eight years later.

Lead author John J. Mitchell says even brief vigorous activity, like rushing for a bus or up stairs, appears more protective than casual movement, tied to reduced inflammation and better cardiovascular function. Outside experts note the findings reinforce a broader, already substantial body of research against prolonged sitting.
