Women in Nampula protested this month after Mozambique's first lady failed to deliver promised capulana dresses ahead of Mozambican Women's Day, echoing similar unrest after the 2024 general election.

The capulana, a garment long tied to Mozambique's independence struggle, doubled as makeshift protection against tear gas during the confrontations, two people were wounded by gunfire in a related protest in Anchilo.

Rights groups have documented arbitrary arrests and excessive force against demonstrators since the disputed 2024 election, while the government has approved a decree allowing it to block telecommunications networks and proposed a new Highway Code penalizing road-blocking protesters.
