Yemen's 2022 truce has unraveled, with Houthi rebels launching a major offensive in early September that seized effective control of the Bab el-Mandeb along the Red Sea coast. The World Food Program's acting executive director Carl Skau said the speed and scale of the escalation exceeded even his worst fears, and reported that Houthi forces have detained 38 WFP staff in Sanaa and occupied the agency's offices in Mokha.
The International Organization for Migration counts more than 145,000 people displaced since June, and the World Health Organization says displaced families face rising risks of cholera, measles, malaria and dengue amid disrupted maternal and chronic care. The WHO reported more than 800 deaths since early August, with casualties climbing at roughly 100 per day in late September.
Aid officials describe a population with no reserves left to draw on. Prosper Global CEO Tjada D'Oyen McKenna said many of those now fleeing have already been displaced multiple times and are being forced to move again at their weakest moment.
