The Republican Party of Florida has endorsed Amendment 3, which would raise the homestead property tax exemption to $250,000 by 2028 and could cut local government revenues by up to $12 billion annually, according to the state legislature's research arm.
The Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association opposes the measure not on tax-relief grounds but because the ballot language was finalized in about three days in early June, before data on county-level impacts existed. Governor Ron DeSantis, who called a related rainy-day fund amendment 'foolish,' has now reversed course and will campaign for Amendment 3.
The Florida Realtors trade group has committed $10 million to a Vote Yes campaign, while planners warn local governments already struggling to update comprehensive plans may have to choose between updating them and funding police and fire services.
