Vatican envoy urges swift end to Ukraine war after Moscow talks with Lavrov

Vatican Archbishop Paul Gallagher met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow, the first in-person Vatican-Russia talks in five years, and called for the war in Ukraine to end, saying continued fighting 'creates new victims' and complicates future reconciliation. The two sides agreed to cooperate on humanitarian issues including aid for children affected by the war.

The meeting came as The Times reported Zelensky, the U.S., and European officials had developed a joint plan involving a ceasefire, mutual troop withdrawal, and a buffer zone, with suggestions the Vatican might carry those proposals to Moscow.
