The Wall Street Journal's editorial board published a scathing piece calling Trump's revived trade war with Canada an escalation of what it previously dubbed the dumbest trade war in history. The U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods, prompting Prime Minister Mark Carney to promise dollar-for-dollar retaliation starting September 8 across steel, dairy, appliances and other sectors.

Trump followed by threatening to raise auto tariffs to 50% starting January 1, calling Canada 'entitled' and one of the worst nations to deal with, and declaring the U.S. does not need it. The Journal noted Republicans are already being hurt on the campaign trail by tariffs and inflation, with voters seeing the trade fight as strategy-free.

When the house organ of the friendliest media empire on the block starts reaching for the word ‘dumber’ as a comparative, the argument is no longer about trade policy but about grading on a curve nobody wanted to establish. The tell is that the defense has quietly shifted from ‘this will work’ to ‘this will work eventually,’ which is what every warranty says right before the transmission goes. A neighbor you announce you do not need is a neighbor who has already priced in your next announcement.
