Chinese competition threatens 300,000 European manufacturing jobs

Trade association Eurometal told The Guardian that EU manufacturing could shed around 300,000 jobs by year's end due to Chinese competition, and staged a protest outside European Commission headquarters on September 7. Eurometal president Alexander Julius said China intends to move beyond raw materials into controlling entire production chains, a strategy he says is spelled out in Beijing's own five-year plan.

Julius argued Chinese metals and chemicals, used in roughly 90% of EU manufacturing, arrive without the steel tariffs and carbon taxes European producers pay, compounded by a weak yuan. China has accused Europe of protectionism and threatened countermeasures, and the two sides have agreed to three months of talks ending in October.
