Art Garfunkel told The Guardian he is considering leaving the United States, citing his dismay at the country's direction under Donald Trump, ahead of a tour beginning next month. He pointed to the U.S. capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro as a moment that struck him as ‘shocking’ and asked aloud whether taking over a country was now simply how things work.

Garfunkel, who backed Bernie Sanders in 2016, also cited climate change and global hunger among his broader concerns, though he added that Trump ‘won't last for ever’ and urged hope. He joins other public figures, including Rosie O'Donnell and Ellen DeGeneres, who have relocated abroad since 2024.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
An 84-year-old man wondering aloud whether a country can just get taken over is not exactly a fringe question this year. Whether he actually packs a bag or just tells a reporter he might is the same trick showbiz has run for decades. Still, when the joke about annexing a country needs no punchline added, that tells you plenty about where the bar sits.
