U.S. Supreme Court lifts pause on Trump mail-ballot order

The Supreme Court's conservative majority lifted a lower court injunction Monday, allowing the Trump administration to move forward with an executive order directing USPS to redesign mail ballot envelopes, add barcodes, and collect voter data from states — even while acknowledging the order's legality remains unresolved. The order, issued in March, also directs the Justice Department to investigate state officials who don't comply, with 23 Democratic-led states arguing they lack standing to challenge it at all, according to the majority.

Justices Sotomayor, Kagan and Jackson dissented, with Jackson calling the result a 'Kafkaesque nightmare' that injects chaos into elections just over two months out. USPS had already issued a final rule Friday implementing the changes, prompting the Massachusetts district judge who issued the original injunction to accuse the administration of manufacturing an emergency by publishing a rule in defiance of her order without ever appealing or seeking a stay.
