Thai student movement forms ‘Hope Theatre,’ making the stage its new battleground

Thailand's Bad Student Organization has moved its long-running campaign against corporal punishment and rigid school rules into a new venue: a stage. Its theater offshoot, Hope Theatre, staged a musical called Ribbon Club in September 2025, using a magic school setting to dramatize teacher violence, forced conformity, and the suppression of student dissent.

The group says it has logged over 200 reports of rights violations in the past year, including corporal punishment that persists despite an official ban enacted in March 2025. Two cases cited involve teachers assigning hundreds of squats as punishment for late homework, one of which sent a student to the hospital months after the ban took effect.

Organizers report the audience skewed young and largely sympathetic, though some older attendees, including a self-described conservative principal, also praised the production. A follow-up show is planned for late 2026 or early 2027, reportedly built around the intense competition for spots at top schools.
