Whitmer directs MSP to investigate fatal crash following ICE pursuit in Grand Rapids

Governor Gretchen Whitmer directed Michigan State Police to independently review a fatal Sunday crash in Grand Rapids after local police and activists said the driver, identified as Mario David Coronado Juárez, was fleeing an ICE traffic stop when he hit a tree and his car caught fire. Grand Rapids Police Chief Joe Trigg requested state help because local police have limited ability to obtain information from federal agents.

U.S. Rep. Hillary Scholten sent ICE's acting director a letter demanding details on the pursuit, including whether it was classified high-risk and whether there was a preexisting warrant, and asked that all footage and reports be preserved. Activists say Coronado Juárez was a father of three in his mid-30s, and his family is seeking to have his remains returned to Guatemala.
