Florida sues NY Times over alleged anti-Israel bias; demands internal records

Florida's state pension fund and a conservative think tank sued the New York Times in Manhattan state court, demanding internal board records related to the paper's coverage of the Israel-Hamas war. The suit, filed by Attorney General James Uthmeier on behalf of the Florida State Board of Administration, which oversees over $276 billion in assets, follows a 28-page letter questioning years of the paper's reporting.

The Times says it never turned over the requested documents, calling the demand harassment that violates the First Amendment. Uthmeier claimed at a press conference that the Times had 'retracted' a Kristof column alleging Israeli forces used dogs to rape Palestinian prisoners, though the paper's opinion editor publicly stood by the column in May.

The lawsuit cites a whistleblower who says she raised bias concerns 15 times before leaving the paper, and points to 72 corrections in eight months as evidence of a pattern. The Times called the suit a pressure campaign dressed up as corporate governance.

Buying a few shares of a newspaper and then demanding its private files is a neat trick, and it would be just as neat if a pension fund in some other state tried it on a paper Florida likes. The attorney general stood up and said a column was retracted when the editor said the opposite out loud in May, which is the sort of detail a careful man checks before the cameras come on. Anybody managing $276 billion of other people's retirement money ought to have a fuller calendar than this.
