Glock Inc. and gun rights groups filed lawsuits against Connecticut over a law taking effect Oct. 1 that bans the sale and possession of cruciform-trigger semiautomatic handguns, citing their susceptibility to illegal conversion into automatic weapons.
The plaintiffs, including the National Shooting Sports Foundation, Shadow Systems, Blue Trail Range, and Glock itself, argue the design is actually safer due to built-in mechanical safeties, and that the law could be used to justify banning nearly any semiautomatic weapon. Glock also wants written confirmation that three of its newer models are exempt, saying the state has not given a straight answer.
Violations carry up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. Everytown for Gun Safety, formed after the Sandy Hook shooting, has championed the law, while Gov. Lamont has called it a commonsense public safety measure.

A gun company suing to protect the honor of its own trigger design is not exactly a shock, the way a fence company would object to a law against fences. The state says the shape makes guns easy to turn automatic, the company says the shape makes guns safer, and somewhere in between a judge is going to have to hold one of these things and decide who is telling the truth. Connecticut passed this because state troopers use these guns too, which tells you the debate is not really about who is safe, it is about who gets to define the word.
