A ballot proposal to bar political contributions from utility companies and government contractors is headed to Michigan's November ballot after Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks said the chamber won't take up a legislative version, following its passage in the Republican-controlled House with bipartisan support. Under state law, the Legislature had 40 days to act after Board of State Canvassers approval or the measure defaults to the general election ballot.

House Speaker Matt Hall called Brinks's decision a mistake and accused her of blocking a vote, while proposal organizers accused Hall of gamesmanship, noting his chamber had let similar bills sit in committee before. Democratic legislators countered that passing it in the Legislature could have made the law easier to later amend or overturn.

A lawsuit from an opposition group, Protect MI Free Speech, remains pending with no oral arguments scheduled as of late August.

The full dispatch is available from the source below.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Both sides have discovered a newfound reverence for 'the will of the voters' precisely when it's convenient to their preferred outcome — Hall wants a legislative vote he insists might fail, Brinks wants no vote at all. Somewhere in that mutual chest-thumping is a half-million signatures' worth of actual voters who just wanted their names to count for something.
