Active court order still blocking Trump effort to restrict vote-by-mail

The Supreme Court gave the Trump administration a procedural victory on its executive order curbing mail-in voting, but a separate injunction from a different lawsuit, brought by the League of Women Voters of Massachusetts and other groups, still blocks the Postal Service from implementing it. The administration promptly asked Judge Indira Talwani to vacate her own August ruling in light of the Supreme Court decision, while the voting rights groups argued it should stay in place.

Complicating matters, USPS issued a final rule Friday detailing implementation, which Talwani said violated her order barring the administration from taking implementation steps, though she declined to act beyond noting the violation. Democratic leaders including Schumer and Jeffries denounced the ruling as enabling election interference, while the administration argues no case is ripe until an agency rule is finalized, an argument now complicated by the fact that one just was.

States retain constitutional authority over election administration, and Democrats argue the order attempts to seize that power for the executive branch.
