Trump’s Canadian trade war stirs up trouble for Republican candidates

President Trump's tariffs on Canadian goods, now as high as 50 percent on billions of dollars of imports, have prompted Canada to hit back with matching tariffs on nearly $28 billion in U.S. exports, timed for maximum political effect ahead of the midterms.

Canadian officials have said plainly they are targeting states with competitive races, and Ohio, Kansas and Maine are absorbing the brunt of it. Republican candidates like Kansas's Roger Marshall and Ohio's Jon Husted are stuck defending local manufacturers like Bombardier while not breaking with the president who started the fight.

State officials, including Minnesota's auditor, describe the tariffs as one more cost pressure landing on cities, farmers and consumers already squeezed by inflation, with property taxes rising to cover the difference.

You put a tariff on your neighbor's tractor and don't be surprised when he puts one on your combine. Canada figured out which states have the closest elections and aimed right for them, and now the very candidates who cheered the trade war are out there defending the factory down the street from it. That is not strategy, that is just the bill coming due at an inconvenient time.
