Michigan has now documented 13,909 cyclosporiasis cases, up from 12,485 the previous week, with 314 hospitalizations and two deaths reported by the state health department. The parasite has spread to 73 of Michigan's 83 counties, with Wayne, Oakland, Washtenaw, Ingham and Genesee counties hit hardest.

The outbreak has been linked to iceberg lettuce from central Mexico, prompting a voluntary recall by Taylor Farms de Mexico and an ongoing FDA and CDC investigation. The CDC's own count, which excludes probable cases, lags behind Michigan's at 13,895 nationally, with over 10,000 of those unconfirmed by lab testing.

The state dropped its earlier advice to buy whole lettuce heads over bagged greens, and now recommends only routine food-safety practices, saying most contaminated produce has likely cycled out of stores. The outbreak spans 15 states, with Michigan accounting for up to 6,999 of the national tally.

The full dispatch is available from the source below.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Nothing reassures quite like a health department telling you the case count nearly doubled last week but the danger has passed. The lettuce advisory came and went before the numbers did, which is either good timing or just timing.
