Nigeria's Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced plans for 41 university innovation hubs, called UniPods, aimed at commercializing academic research and shifting the country toward a knowledge-driven economy. The announcement followed a meeting with the UNDP and seven university vice-chancellors, with eight UniPods inaugurated or ready and three operational so far at the University of Lagos, Nasarawa State University, and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture.

Specialized hubs include a Blue Economy UniPod in Akwa Ibom, AgroTech at Benue State University, and GovTech at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Alausa said success would be measured by jobs and commercial impact rather than buildings, framing the initiative as support for President Tinubu's goal of a $1 trillion economy.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Forty-one hubs sounds impressive until you notice only three are actually running, and 'measured by practical solutions rather than physical structures' is exactly the kind of line a minister says before the ribbon-cuttings become the whole story. Ask again in two years how many UniPods have shipped an actual product.
