A rumor spreading online claims Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed said America deserved the 9/11 terrorist attacks. His Republican opponent Mike Rogers repeated the claim in multiple video and text posts on X, Instagram and Facebook.

No evidence supports El-Sayed making such a statement; searches turned up no coverage from major outlets. The actual quote traces to Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, who said 'America deserved 9/11' in 2019 and later walked it back, explaining he meant to reference US foreign policy consequences. Piker campaigned for El-Sayed in 2026.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Attributing a supporter's seven-year-old streaming quip to the candidate himself is either sloppy research or a deliberate game of telephone — and given how many times Rogers repeated it across platforms, sloppy seems like the charitable read.
