In Alaska's competitive Senate race, Republican incumbent Dan Sullivan faces Democrat Mary Peltola, who has led narrowly in polling and outperformed him in last month's primary, in a contest that could help decide Senate control. Voters interviewed across Anchorage and Palmer described choosing candidates less on policy than on vibe, with one independent voter citing dueling fish photos as decisive: Peltola gutting fish on a working boat versus Sullivan posing with a trophy catch and a dead bear.

The state's registration numbers explain why such impressions matter: 58% of the 611,940 Alaskans who voted in 2024 were registered nonpartisan or undeclared, despite Trump carrying the state by 14 points that year. Alaska keeps reminding the two parties that a lot of people vote with their gut and their sense of who is putting on a show. A senator holding up a trophy fish for the camera is telling you something, and apparently the something it tells a lot of Alaskans is 'stay away from my Kodiak bear.' Nobody polls for authenticity, but this year it might be the whole ballgame.
