India security chief visits China for border talks

India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval arrived in Beijing for two days of talks on the disputed Himalayan border, meeting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Vice President Han Zheng, India's foreign ministry said.

The two countries have held repeated rounds of such talks since a deadly 2020 clash, and this round comes ahead of a BRICS summit in New Delhi that India hopes Xi Jinping will attend. China's foreign ministry spoke of 'in-depth communication' safeguarding 'peace and tranquility,' the standard language for a border still unresolved.

India's opposition this month said it was 'deeply alarmed' by reports of Indian and Chinese patrols coming face-to-face in Arunachal Pradesh in July, which India's government denied. China claims the state as part of southern Tibet; India calls it integral territory, an argument now old enough to vote.
