Germany begins mass production of attack drones for Ukraine

Near Munich, the German-American firm Auterion and Ukrainian partner Airlogix have begun mass-producing attack drones under a roughly 300-million-euro German government order, with more than 5,000 units due by mid-2027 and a first batch already made. Two models are planned, one able to fly up to 1,500 kilometers, and a second factory in eastern Germany is in the works. The venture's name, exact location, and drone names remain undisclosed.

The opening landed amid a rough patch in German-Russian relations: Berlin has accused Moscow of sabotaging a Ukrainian cargo plane at Leipzig Airport, and two Bulgarian nationals were detained after an attempted arson at a defense company's construction site the day before the plant opened. Whether that company has any link to the drone order is, so far, unclear.

Separately, three incidents hit German energy facilities within a week: a short circuit at a substation near Cologne, explosive devices found at a Brandenburg substation, and a suspicious object near a substation in North Rhine-Westphalia. No connections between these events have been officially confirmed.
