Sen. Rick Scott campaigned with GOP gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds in Pinellas County Thursday, urging voters to return mail ballots early, as a new St. Pete Polls survey showed Donalds and Democrat David Jolly essentially tied at 44.7% to 44.6%. A separate Mason-Dixon poll released a day earlier had Donalds up 48%-41%, a discrepancy both outside each survey's margin of error.
Donalds told the crowd he is courting Black voters more aggressively than typical Republican campaigns, saying he wants '100%' rather than a bare majority. Hours earlier, former Democratic Rep. Al Lawson endorsed Jolly and urged Black voters not to be swayed by Donalds, citing his vote against the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and his praise for the Supreme Court ruling that gutted part of the original law.
If elected, Donalds would become the first Black Republican governor in U.S. history.

Two polls landing a week apart with a seven-point gap tells you less about the race than about how much stock to put in any one poll. Scott's pitch to vote early so the campaign stops spending money on texting you is a funny way to ask for your vote, but it's honest about where the money actually goes. Lawson's warning and Donalds' outreach are aimed at the same voters, which is usually a sign somebody thinks that vote is actually in play.
