Sen. Tim Scott defended Darline Graham, appointed to her late brother Lindsey Graham's Senate seat and now facing Rep. Ralph Norman in a Tuesday runoff, after she told debate viewers last week, 'I'm just going to be honest here. I'm not that informed on national security,' when asked about Taiwan and the South China Sea. Scott called her 'the real deal' on ‘Meet the Press.’

Graham, who has no prior political experience, lost the Republican primary outright before advancing to the runoff. Trump rallied for her Friday, telling supporters she 'knows politics well' and 'loves things that have to do with greatness for America,' remarks Scott praised as 'fabulous' for making the case personal through Trump's relationship with her late brother.

Being unable to answer a basic national security question during a debate is usually disqualifying; here it's being rebranded as authenticity by the same senator who waited 30 days to bless the appointment in the first place. 'The real deal' is doing a lot of work when the deal in question just admitted she hasn't done the reading.
