Hurricane Lala struck Hawaii's Big Island over the weekend, killing at least two people and leaving widespread damage across the archipelago.

May Doi, 93, a longtime kindergarten teacher in Naalehu, was found dead after apparently trying to flee floodwaters to reach a shelter; a man in his 60s was found dead in a pasture during a welfare check. Residents are clearing mud, downed trees and displaced caskets from at least two damaged cemeteries while lacking power in many homes.

Forecasters say Lala has since strengthened into a major Category 3 hurricane well west of the main islands, and a separate tropical system could threaten Hawaii again by the weekend. Power restoration in some areas could take weeks.
