Harold Gene Lucas, 74, was scheduled for lethal injection Tuesday evening at Florida State Prison, marking the state's 14th execution this year and the 33rd in the past 21 months. He was convicted in 1977 of first-degree murder and two attempted murder counts in a 1976 Bonita Springs shooting, and had been resentenced to death four additional times.

Florida executed 19 people in 2025, breaking its prior modern record of 18 set in 2018, and two more executions are already scheduled for later this month. Gov. Ron DeSantis said in July he expects his administration to conduct more executions than any in state history, while stating he takes no pride in the fact.
