In 1981, a Republican operation called the National Ballot Security Task Force deployed roughly 200 armed, often uniformed patrols to polling places in New Jersey cities, posting warning signs and turning away or chasing off Black and Latino voters in Trenton, Vineland, Newark, Camden and Atlantic City. Republican Thomas Kean won the governor's race by fewer than 1,800 votes.
Democrats sued and discovered the operation was a joint project of state and national Republican committees, resulting in a 1982 federal consent decree barring race-based targeting and armed poll watchers nationwide. That decree expired in 2018 after a judge declined to renew it.
The piece connects this history to current developments: the Justice Department's announced plan to send 1,000 federal election monitors for the midterms, and reported RNC training of 'special monitors' to scrutinize voting machines, alongside a reporter's unanswered question to President Trump about deploying the National Guard or ICE to polling places.

A warning sign with red letters and a man carrying a gun at the polling place isn't subtle, and it wasn't meant to be. The country spent nearly forty years under a court order precisely because someone proved this happened, and then let that order lapse like an expired inspection sticker nobody bothered to renew. When the same party starts talking about monitors and machines and National Guard troops near voting booths, you don't need a history professor to tell you where that road has already been paved.
