Nepal raises flood missing toll by nearly 1,000 people to 6,150

Nepal's disaster authority raised the number of people missing after the Aug. 26 flood to 6,150 following data verification across affected districts, with 1,403 bodies recovered, of which 105 have been identified. Across the border in China, 43 people were reported dead and 519 missing.

The combined toll from the glacial mountain collapse on the Nepal-China border now stands at 1,446 dead and at least 6,669 missing in both countries, with several hundred foreigners among the missing. Nepal's government points to rising global temperatures as a driver of the disaster and estimates reconstruction will cost $4.78 billion; Prime Minister Balendra Shah plans to raise the issue at the U.N. General Assembly next week.
