President Trump used a nearly two-hour convention speech in Dallas to announce a $5,000 payment to every American adult, contingent on Republicans keeping Congress in November, and asked recipients to spend it domestically.

The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget put the price tag at roughly $1.2 trillion and called the plan fiscally dangerous given a national debt already equal to the size of the economy and annual deficits of $2 trillion. The Tax Foundation separately found that Trump's tariffs would generate only about $124.9 billion in 2027, a tenth of what the dividend would cost.

Vice President Vance told Fox News the payments would be funded by tariff revenue and framed them as a reward for keeping Republicans in power. Trump has previously promised similar payments, in 2025 from tariffs and via Musk's DOGE project, neither of which materialized; the Supreme Court struck down the emergency tariffs in February and the government is now refunding nearly $170 billion in collected duties.

Anybody who's been promised the same $5,000 twice already knows how the third telling goes. The arithmetic here isn't hidden, either: the tariffs bring in about a tenth of what the check costs, and the government is busy handing back $170 billion it already collected. A man who owes on the barn doesn't fix it by promising the neighbors a bonus if they vote right in November.
