Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc meets U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer again Thursday as an Aug. 19 deadline looms for 50% tariffs on Canadian goods, this time with no CUSMA exemptions. Greer has tied the tariffs to provincial U.S. liquor bans, Canada's dairy supply management, and vehicle import quotas.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is pushing for a deal that protects auto, steel, aluminum, forestry, and agriculture, saying Canada should retaliate tariff-for-tariff. Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette says supply management and cultural protections are non-negotiable red lines as some industries brace for 'survival mode.'

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Threatening to tariff a trade agreement that was supposed to prevent exactly this kind of tariff is a fairly on-brand move at this point. Canada's negotiators are left haggling over dairy and liquor shelves while the deadline clock does the actual negotiating.
