Judge Gregory Carro ruled Tuesday that the 12-person jury in Luigi Mangione's New York murder trial will remain anonymous to the public, citing the intense spotlight on the case. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel in December 2024, with jury selection set to begin September 8.
The hearing also addressed evidentiary rulings: Carro previously excluded items seized during Mangione's Pennsylvania arrest, including a gun magazine, phone, wallet, and computer chip, but allowed prosecutors to use a gun and notebook containing Mangione's writings. Prosecutors have surveillance footage they say shows the shooting and Mangione's movements afterward, along with ballistics and fingerprint evidence.
Mangione's defense has not yet revealed a full alternative theory, having floated and then withdrawn an 'extreme emotional disturbance' argument earlier this summer. He also faces a separate federal trial next year, to which he has likewise pleaded not guilty.
