Hackers breach Pentagon database holding data on nearly 3 million military personnel

Hackers breached the Pentagon's Defense Manpower Data Center, exposing personal data on nearly 3 million people, according to a Defense Department official. The compromised records include Social Security numbers and job details for 2.76 million living people and roughly 294,000 deceased individuals.

The unauthorized access reportedly ran from October 2025 to July 2026 before the vulnerability was found and patched, meaning the intrusion went undetected for the better part of a year. The DMDC houses records on active-duty troops, reservists, civilians, contractors, veterans, and family members across more than 60 million entries.

Officials say they have found no evidence yet that the stolen data has been used maliciously, and affected people are being offered credit monitoring. The breach follows a separate reported hack of nearly all FBI personnel records, suggesting the federal government's employee data has had a rough season.
