Benson chooses Brinks as running mate, citing leadership and legislative wins

Michigan gubernatorial nominee Jocelyn Benson picked state Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks as her running mate, citing Brinks' legislative record and her base on the state's west side. Brinks touted her role in Democratic-led wins from 2023-2024 including tax cuts, free school meals, and gun-safety laws, and pledged more of the same.

The pairing sets up an all-female Democratic ticket against an all-male Republican slate led by Rep. John James and state Rep. Jay DeBoyer, with Republican strategists predicting the gender gap won't matter electorally. Brinks used her remarks to accuse James of answering to Donald Trump rather than Michigan voters, while a chorus of party officials and labor and environmental groups lined up with near-identical statements praising her as tireless, battle-tested, and a proven fighter.

Nothing captures the modern campaign rollout quite like eight separate endorsers reaching for the phrase 'tireless advocate' as if it were assigned homework. The actual policy disagreements are presumably somewhere in there, buried under the press-release equivalent of a group hug.
