Nancy Landon Kassebaum Baker, the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from Kansas, died Friday in Topeka at age 94, according to local reports and her family.

Daughter of former Kansas governor Alf Landon, she served three terms from 1978 to 1997, becoming the first woman to chair a major standing Senate committee and co-authoring the Kassebaum-Kennedy health insurance law with Senator Edward Kennedy.

Her family requested donations to the Kansas 4-H Foundation or Capper Foundation in lieu of other tributes, with a private memorial planned for later.
