Police moved hundreds of migrants from Ceuta's beaches into a new 1,700-place tent camp Friday, weeks after more than 70,000 people crossed from Morocco in a single unprecedented surge on July 30 and 31.

Thousands of migrants had been living in the streets and on beaches for weeks as tensions rose with the enclave's 84,000 residents, who have staged near-daily protests, some backed by far-right groups.

The Spanish government pushed ahead with the transfer over the objections of Ceuta's conservative local government, while officials and opposition leaders traded blame over sovereignty, Morocco's role, and who let the crisis fester this long.
