The White House says President Trump has secured U.S. majority control of more than 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan oil reserves through a deal signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, creating a new private entity called NABEP. The administration frames this as the biggest oil deal in world history, arriving at zero cost to the United States, following what it calls the incredible success of an operation named Absolute Resolve.

The fact sheet describes the arrangement as part of a three-part plan of stabilization, reconstruction and democratic transition for Venezuela, while noting that many of the oil fields in question were previously operated by Russian and Chinese firms or Maduro-era insiders. Any deal advertised as the biggest in world history at zero cost is, by the laws of arithmetic and used cars, neither. When a press release has to invoke the Monroe Doctrine to explain why a private entity now holds another country's oil, the word 'stabilization' is doing the kind of heavy lifting normally reserved for forklifts. We'd ask who audits NABEP, but the fact sheet already answered: nobody, gloriously, ever.
