Primary results across six states Tuesday showed a mixed night for Trump's endorsements and a mixed night for progressive challengers. In South Carolina, Trump-backed Sen. Darline Graham advanced to an Aug. 25 runoff against Rep. Ralph Norman after finishing first in a crowded field, though two-thirds of Republican voters chose candidates Trump did not endorse. In Wisconsin, Trump-endorsed Rep. Tom Tiffany won his primary by a landslide.

In Minnesota, Trump's pick Mike Lindell lost to Lisa Demuth. On the Democratic side, Peggy Flanagan's win over Angie Craig in Minnesota and a tight Wisconsin gubernatorial race between David Crowley and democratic socialist Francesca Hong suggested a base hungry for tougher opposition to Trump's immigration enforcement, including the Operation Metro Surge crackdown in the Twin Cities.

In Wisconsin, Hong nearly upset the more moderate Crowley despite a spotty record of controversial statements and no Bernie Sanders endorsement, showing progressive energy without a clean path to winning.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
The takeaway offered by every outlet covering primary night is that the takeaway is unclear, which is the safest possible thing to write and also the least useful. Endorsements worked in the states where the establishment already agreed with them and flopped where the candidate was uniquely compromised — that's not a trend, that's just what happened.
