Former special counsel Jack Smith testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee, defending his prosecutions of Donald Trump over classified documents and 2020 election interference. Sen. Eric Schmitt called Smith a 'total dirtbag' and accused him of perjury over his whereabouts on a specific date, but the accusation collapsed when it emerged Schmitt's team had confused the Atlanta Hawks with the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Smith said he would not be silenced by threats including Trump's calls for his prosecution, and stood by his charging decisions. Chair Chuck Grassley argued the investigation was really about mapping the Republican Party, while Democrats including Dick Durbin and Cory Booker called the hearing a smokescreen and gaslighting.

If you're going to call a man a liar under oath in front of the whole country, you'd think somebody on staff would check which Hawks were playing. Senator Schmitt came loaded for bear and shot his own mailbox. Most of us learned before middle school that you settle the facts first and do the name-calling after, if at all.
