Northern Michigan residents receive millions in FEMA aid for April flooding

Millions of dollars in FEMA individual assistance are reaching homeowners and renters across northern Michigan after April's historic flooding, with more than 500 applications approved region-wide and nearly $5 million distributed to northwestern lower Michigan counties so far.

Wexford County leads the pack with 171 approved applicants and $2.8 million in aid, second in the state only to Saginaw County. Grand Traverse County reported 72 approved applicants totaling over $714,000, Benzie County eight applicants for $18,587, and Kalkaska County 51 applicants for more than $334,000.

Local officials note their own tallies sometimes diverge from FEMA's official numbers, chalked up to the ordinary lag of an ongoing approval process. Residents in affected counties have until the end of the month to apply, and officials are already treating flooding as a permanent addition to emergency planning rather than a freak occurrence.
