Pew Research Center data released Monday finds 60% of U.S. adults say 'working class' describes them well, up from 54% in 2024, spanning income levels and education. Even half of financially comfortable Americans — those who pay bills in full and keep emergency savings — claim the label.

Republicans identify as working class more than Democrats overall (67% to 55%), a gap that persists even among college graduates and widens further among higher-income adults. White and Hispanic adults are more likely than Black or Asian adults to self-identify this way, per the survey of 8,512 adults conducted in January.

A term meant to describe people without much money or power has become so elastic that half of the financially comfortable now claim it too, mostly along partisan lines rather than pay stubs. Politicians promising to 'fight for the working class' are increasingly just promising to fight for whoever raises their hand.
